Pannala, Kurunegala — Continuing their nationwide initiative to preserve traditional art forms and empower youth, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) and the Shri Hela Cultural Collaboration Foundation (SHCCF) successfully held a certificate awarding ceremony for young dance students on March 1, 2024, at the Weherahera Sanka Rhythma Art Academy.
The ceremony marked the completion of a two-year free traditional dance education program provided to children across several villages in the Pannala Divisional Secretariat Division of the Kurunegala District.
Two Years of Free Cultural Education
For over two years, the IHRC and SHCCF have established multiple cultural centers across Sri Lanka to offer local dance lessons free of charge to children who lack access to formal fine arts training.
The Weherahera center was led by veteran choreographers Mr. Amaradasa Delankarachchi and Mr. Sadeva Amaradasa, who serve as Volunteer Coordinators for the IHRC and Cultural Affairs Directors for the SHCCF. Their dedicated mentorship provided rigorous training in traditional Sri Lankan dance styles to students from various rural communities, including Weherahera, Yakwila, Kongoda, Daraluwa, Hunuwila, Elabadagama, Yayamulla, and Dampandiya.
Art as a Catalyst for Harmony and Character Building
Addressing the students and parents, Dr. Chrishantha J.K.M. Dissanayake, Sri Lankan Commissioner of the IHRC and Founder / President and Director General of SHCCF, emphasized the transformative power of the arts in society.
